Discover the Castle Road
Eastern Styria is well-known for its culinary tradition, its wonderful hilly landscape and its great cultural heritage.

Pass by typical Styrian farms, drive through the hilly landscape, endulge in the sinfully delicious culinary specialties, and roam the 15+ castles of the area. Enjoy the baroque style of the castle in Pöllau, the impressive landmark of the Riegersburg fortress, the playfulness of Herberstein palace or the characteristics and history of some of the other castles, fortresses and palaces.

After so much culture we recommend a relaxing day in one of the seven modern spas along the way. They all offer spacious pools with thermal spring water, wellness centers and beauty farms.

And don’t miss to try the dishes of the local cuisine. Sweet teeths will especially like the great deserts and dishes of the ‘Apple region’ around Puch bei Weiz. This area is also close to the famous to the Styrian wine region. Just a little detour will take you in the heart of the wine country.

We recommand to start or/and terminate this tour at our new Youth & Family Guesthouse with its great infrastructure. Spacious, friendly rooms, a Finnish sauna, a beautiful courtyard, fireplaces, and a chill-out lounge will certainly exceed your expectations. We guarantee the best price-quality relationship in the area.

From Pöllau follow the castle route via Stubenberg with its beautiful lake, to Herberstein castle with its zoo, to Herberstein castle and Bad Waltersdorf (great spa). After Bad Waltersdorf you take the road to Ilz and the closeby Riegersburg fortress with its most gloomy witch museum. Not far from the Riegersburg fortress is the Youth & Family Guesthouse Fürstenfeld with its spacious garden and the beautiful sun terrace.

After a relaxing night at our guesthouse in Fürstenfeld you continue the tour to Feldbach, Kalch and the castle Karpfenstein. If you are planning on exploring the wine region, one of Styrians ‘wine streets’ starts at St. Anna am Aigen near Kalch. Also the spa at Bad Gleichenberg is well worth a visit. Not far from Bad Gleichenberg is our Youth & Family Guesthouse Gnas. It is perfect for a short overnight stay or for an extended stay in the area. The adjacent sports center offers tennis courts, a climbing wall and much more.

Shortly after Kalch you enter the province of Burgenland. Take the road to Jennersdorf, Kukmirn and Geresdorf. Here you almost touch the Austro-Hungarian border. Via Eisenberg an der Pinka, Rechnitz and Lockenhaus the road takes you into southernmost corner of another Austrian province, Lower Austria. From Lower Austria you take a winding street back into Styria.
