The Arno Trail is divided in eight well-marked segments, some of which are only recommendable for experienced mountain hikers with good equipment. Other segments are easier to conquer but not less interesting. Each segment is easily accessible. Along the way interesting pilgrimage sites, religious and other cultural monuments and spectacular landscapes with high mountains, gorges and alpine meadows astound hikers and pilgrims.
The trail starts in the city of Salzburg in front of the cathedral and leads hikers up the fortress and from there to the pilgrimage church Maria Dürrnberg on the Dürrnberg near Hallein. The next stops on the way are St. Bartholomä on the picturesque Königssee in Bavaria and Maria Kirchthal near Lofer, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the province of Salzburg. Via Krimml with its impressive waterfalls and Kaprun the trail leads up the Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain. From here the way descends to Heiligenblut, an important pilgrimage site in the province of Carinthia, and back to Salzburg, to Böckstein. The pilgrimage site with its picture of the Virgin Mary is especially interesting in Böckstein. Now the trail leads hikers and pilgrims to Bad Gastein and Tamsweg. The St. Leonhard church in Tamsweg was a major pilgrimage site in the middle ages and still attracts many visitors. From Tamsweg hikers follow the trail to Abtenau and the medieval city of Radstadt. Over mountains and meadows the trail continues from Radstadt to Abtenau and to Fuschl am See. The crystal clear waters of the Fuschl Lake are a refreshing change. After Fuschl hikers will reach Mattsee and its interesting monastery and Oberndorf with the famous chapel where “Silent Night, Holly Night” was sang for the first time. The pilgrimage site Maria Bühel in Germany is the next stop before the Arno trail leads to Nußdorf and to Maria Plain, the famous pilgrimage site on the outskirts of the city of Salzburg. The trail ends where it started, in front of the cathedral in Salzburg.
Along the Arno trail, four Youth & Family Hostels and Guesthouse will care for your well-being. Our hostel in Salzburg is conveniently located in a park-like area and only 5 min from the cathedral in the city center. Plan several days for sightseeing in the city of Salzburg before or after your hiking adventure, it is definitely worth it. The hostel in Hallein in the castle of Wispach is open from April to October and offers basic accommodation in a historic building. Our guesthouse in Kaprun is on the way and is perfect for all who want to stay overnight or would like to spend several days discovering the beautiful and spectacular landscape of the Hohen Tauern mountain range. From Tamsweg it is about 15 km to our guesthouse in St. Michael. It is worth the detour if you are planning on spending two or three days relaxing or sightseeing in this beautiful and interesting region.
